EMOTIONS / FEELINGS
Some people find it hard to find the words to describe how they are feeling.
Maybe they were never taught these words or maybe the emotion is a new one that they haven't experienced before.
Others may have the words to describe what they're feeling but they're too afraid of feeling the emotion so they bury it or deny that it's happening which in turn creates a 'Fear of Feeling'.
HOW CAN COUNSELLING HELP WITH EMOTIONS & FEELINGS?
When working with someone who is having difficulty putting a name to their emotion I will get them to describe the situation to me and help by offering suggestions of words to describe the feeling they are telling me about. This will, in turn, help to increase their vocabulary and help them to be able to recognise what they are feeling at any given time.
When working with someone who is afraid of feeling the emotion I offer them an environment where they can experience the emotion while also feeling safe. This allows the brain to re-compute the emotion and they will start to lose the fear.
