BEREAVEMENT / LOSS

BEREAVEMENT / LOSS

WHAT IS BEREAVEMENT / LOSS?

Everyone experiences losses during their life.  It can be as a result of the death of someone they know, it can be moving jobs, house or school, it can be that a friend or relative moves away, it can be that they have a falling out with someone that results in the loss of a friendship or family tie, it can be the ending of a relationship.

Most losses leave 'Unfinished Business' which can eat away at the bereaved person, causing all types of anxiety-related problems.

It is generally accepted that there are Stages of Grief that everyone will go through when experiencing any type of loss.  Problems arise when a person becomes 'stuck' in one of these stages.

HOW CAN COUNSELLING PROVIDE HELP FOR GRIEF?

I believe that anyone who is experiencing a loss of whatever type needs time to come to terms with their feelings and to integrate the loss as part of themselves.

This process should not be rushed, it can take anything from a few weeks or months to a few years.

Counselling gives someone the opportunity to talk things through at their own pace and to express their feelings about the loss without judgement.

I also believe that loss is at the root of many different problems, and that by exploring the losses that someone has previously experienced, and how they were dealt with at the time, the individual may be able to cope with any future losses.
